A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Acoustic Guitar

If you are in the market for an acoustic guitar, there’s a good chance you have been perusing the guitar magazines and your local music shops. With such a wide variety of brands and models available, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by choice. This can be especially true if you are new to acoustics.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to acoustics is to stick to better-known brands if at all possible. These companies are looking for lifetime customers, and have the quality and customer service that lesser-known brands just can’t offer. With that in mind, here are a handful of major brands and an overview of their products.

CF Martin

Martin is the company that put the modern acoustic guitar on the map. These fine instruments are made from the highest quality materials and manufactured under the highest quality control standards. These guitars are, by and large, investment grade. You will love the way these guitars sound, and with proper care, they will last a lifetime. This kind of quality doesn’t come cheap, but if you want a well-made guitar with a rich, deep sound and beautiful appearance, you can’t get a better guitar.

Established in 1974, Taylor acoustic guitars have become the guitar of choice for many artists, including Dave Matthews and Taylor Swift. They offer a wide variety of guitars for all budgets, made from high-quality woods. Like the Martins, most Taylors tend to be slightly pricier than their competition, but have the higher quality that justifies their price.

Because of the innovations Leo Fender and his company brought to electric guitars and basses, their line of acoustics sometimes gets unfairly overlooked. Fender currently offers over 100 different acoustics in every price range: from classical nylon-string models to leading edge acoustic/electric models. For the beginner or the player on a low budget, Fender offers many affordable models under the Starcaster and Squier labels. Most of these are replicas of their Fender-branded brethren, and while they may not use the same grade of materials as the guitars they emulate, they are generally well made and will last for many years with proper care.

The iconic Gibson brand has been with us for over 110 years, and a perusal of their acoustic guitar line will give you a very good clue as to the reason. Their legendary Hummingbird model is just the starting point. Their upper-end guitars rival Martin and Taylor for sound and build quality. And like most of the other brands listed here, Gibson offers custom-made guitars for a price. This literally means the sky is the limit. Their Epiphone division makes outstanding mid-priced guitars, many of them lower-priced replicas of Gibson models. Both brands are definitely worth considering.

When it comes to getting good value for your money, Ibanez is one of your best choices. Although they are best known for their electric models, when you pick up and play one of their acoustics you will be struck by the feel, the sound, and the playability of these fine guitars. (Their acoustic bass guitars are also an incredible value.) The prices of these guitars are typically a bit lower than those of the other brands listed here, but don’t let that fool you. These are good guitars for players at all levels.

This company got its start in a small shop at the foot of the mountain in Japan that the company is named after. In just over 50 years, Takamine has expanded worldwide and its high-quality guitars are used by renowned artists all over the globe. Country superstars Toby Keith and Kenney Chesney and legendary Eagles guitarist Glen Frey are among the artists who swear by Takamine.

Armed with the information above, you now have a better insight as to the choices open to you. Take your time, research these companies and their products, and check out what’s available at your local guitar shop.
